ITALIAN SUPERSTAR JOVANOTTI CONFIRMS BONNAROO 2011
(New York, February 15, 2011) Italy's number one recording artist Jovanotti announces his appearance at the 10th edition of the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, TN. The addition of the Tuscan singer, songwriter and rapper to the now legendary event’s line-up marks the first-ever performance by an Italian artist at the Festival. Jovanotti's Bonnaroo set will also be the first by a new generation Italian language star at a major US rock festival.
Jovanotti's 12th studio album Ora (Now) debuted at number one in Italy the week of February 1, 2011 and includes special guests Michael Franti and Amadou & Mariam. Italy’s premier music ambassador — who has shared the stage with peers around the world such as Juanes, Bono and Bob Geldof — is the obvious choice for Bonnaroo’s International Mash Up Stage on Saturday, June 11, which will be curated by Eugene Hütz of Gogol Bordello. This will be Jovanotti’s only US concert date for 2011.

JOVANOTTI BACKGROUNDER:
Until now, American audiences have had to make do with mere glimpses of the brilliant career of one of Italy’s most famous contemporary artists, the Tuscan singer and songwriter and rapper Lorenzo Cherubini, professionally known as Jovanotti. Over the past twenty years his recorded and live collaborations with Michael Franti, Ben Harper, The Beastie Boys, Juanes, Carlinhos Brown, Sergio Mendes, and Bono, among other well-known names, have occasionally caught the ear of the adventurous listener. Delivering lyrics in a half-sung, half-spoken style that pays homage to the Beats, Jovanotti uses the rhythm and the ricochet of consonants and catchy melodic hooks to create songs that are instantly accessible to an international audience.
Jovanotti launched his musical career in the late ‘eighties from a dj stint on Milan’s popular Radio Deejay network to become a commercially successful, if not critically regarded, pop rapper/dj. Throughout the ‘nineties, Jovanotti steeped himself in international influences which, not unlike Manu Chao, he synthesized into a uniquely modern version of the traditional Italian singer-songwriter. As his music evolved, so did his lyrics, as he began to use his songs to address philosophical, religious and political issues.
Jovanotti was the first Italian to work for MTV. The term ‘world beat’, used to describe foreign language music with a groove, had just come into vogue as the singer took to the role of Fellini-esque master of ceremonies on the early 1990’s MTV program “Earth to MTV”.
His public commentary on politics became more pronounced on his sixth studio album Lorenzo 1994 and both his critical and international acclaim increased. The song ‘Serenata Rap’ was the most frequently shown video on MTV Latino in that year and Jovanotti made two live concert appearances on MTV Europe.
In the late ‘nineties, Jovanotti made a direct leap into the arena of world music, recording a portion of his seventh album Lorenzo 1997 in South Africa with local musicians and guest stars. He also released a greatest hits album in Spanish with lyrics translated by Jarabe de Palo and Oscar-winner Jorge Drexler.
Jovanotti has recorded twelve studio albums; the five most recent releases have all gone to number one in Italy. His 2008 studio album, the award-winning, multi-platinum Safari was recorded in Los Angeles, Tuscany, Rio de Janeiro, Hannover, Germany and Milan. The CD was certified as Italy’s #1 selling album of 2008 with more than 600,000 copies sold.
In 2009 Italy’s iconic pop star took an unusual route into the US market. Rather than play the obligatory round of venues typical for a major Italian language artist, Jovanotti, an unabashed fan of New York City, took up residency in the Village and spent the summer of 2009 working out a mostly US-based band in the downtown club scene. The national media attention generated by Jovanotti's string of 16 sold out dates spurred the demand for a wider North American tour, the first leg of which resulted in a run of eight more sold out dates through the Northeast and Midwest in April and May 2010. An adept stadium and arena headliner in Europe, Jovanotti's trans-Atlantic fans were treated to the rare club set by a superstar artist in some of the most renowned venues for rock and world music on the North American continent. In the summer of 2010 Jovanotti made his West Coast debut with headline appearances in more familiar open air surroundings at the Santa Monica Pier and San Francisco’s Stern Grove, finally capping off his year in front of a capacity crowd at New York’s Central Park SummerStage.
2010 also saw the debut US album release, Oyeah, by the chart topping Tuscan singer, songwriter and rapper for the legendary Verve Forecast label. Oyeah was recorded in New York City during the Summer of 2009 during Jovanotti's series of residencies at leading Manhattan and Brooklyn clubs with the Soleluna NY LAB, a New York-based collective of musicians from Italy, the United States and Brazil. An acclaimed pioneer in the international hip hop scene renown for working in his native Italian language, Jovanotti again broke new ground on his first Stateside set. Resisting the temptation of re-purposing existing recordings in English for the American market, Jovanotti instead conceived and created a project entirely within its borders, incorporating multiple languages and achieving a musical result ready for worldwide consumption.
The name Jovanotti is taken from the plural form of the Italian word giovanotto (“young man”). Lorenzo had once used the Italian-American “Joe Vanotti” as an artistic name before morphing it into his famous moniker “Jovanotti”. The spelling of Jovanotti is anglicized, as the letter J is not used in Italian.
